By late spring, 1944 American and British bombers had been wreaking havoc on German targets for almost two years, Significant victories had been won. Allied troops had advanced halfway up the boot of Italy and liberated Rome, far to the east. The Soviet Red Army, after four years of horrendous combat, was pushing back the massive German invasion that had begun in 1941. But France, Belgium and the other occupied countries of Western Europe were still under Nazi rule. Their best hope for freedom and the Allies best chance for winning the war lay in the invasion of France. If successful, it would force Germany's already over extended armies to defend their hold on Western Europe. At the same time they were fighting furiously in the Soviet Union.
