NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson also holds the American record for most consecutive days in space. Even NASA mission control is 25% women and growing. During the space shuttle program, scientists and engineers wanted to create something that could be used more than once and sustained an astronaut in space for long durations of time. What they came up with was practically a wearable spacecraft introducing the extravehicular mobility unit, or E M. U spacesuit.
