Mobster Voices
The mobster is a character involved in Italian crime families, colloquially known as the mafia or mob. The mobster character is violent, driven by greed and familial loyalty. The mobster character is intimidating, and feels no remorse over threatening others or over the use of violence to get what he or she desires. Mobster characters may be driven by motivations ranging from a desire for community or order, wealth, power or satisfaction of their violent tendencies. There are female mobster characters, but they are very much a minority, and commit only 2.5% of the crimes.
The mobster character embodies the negative traits associated with most other criminals, with the added elements of being more territorial, usually more organised, and more prone to violence. The mobster character is part of a specific crime family, and depending on the role, has different responsibilities and levels of respect. The mobster character is usually involved in conflict with other gangs or crime families, as well as law enforcement. Mobster characters may be arrested in conflicts or as a result of being connected to another crime, and usually do not cooperate with police. Other mobsters may become informants, and some undercover officers may infiltrate mobs. Mobsters may be on good terms with bribed officers, however, and often had law enforcement under their thumb at the peak of their power.
The mobster character can range in role from being a low level recruit to a high level mob boss. The low level mobster typically is less trusted in the mob, seen as expendable, and does most of the violent and dangerous criminal work. There are middle level mobsters who may control regions for a mob boss, and have more respect and authority. There are also mob bosses, who control all criminal operations, and are typically more intelligent, charismatic and powerful, sometimes having good reputations outside of the crime world, with others unaware of their shady practices. These mob bosses engage in most of the white collar crime, and maintain connections with local, regional and national figures.
The mobster character can be seen primarily in movies and television shows such as the crime genre, as well as in documentaries about urban crime. Mobster characters may have different accents depending on the localities and backgrounds assigned to the characters, though the vast majority of mobsters have an Italian background, with the most common subgroup being the Sicilian mafia. By watching media with mobster characters in it, and learning the background of the mobster character you are voicing, you can learn to speak like you’ve been a goodfella your whole life.
